Well what can be said other than Real Madrid had an absolute dreadful end to their evening at the Bernabéu against Manchester City tonight. A match that was going Real Madrid’s way after a 60th minute goal from Isco, ends in sheer disappointment.
The first half was fairly quiet by the way of chances and obviously goals. Real did a good job of tightening around Kevin De Bruyne and limiting his passing; we know how dangerous he can be given open space.
Vinicius was a clear bright spot tonight, his pace and play were very welcoming. He even made a no look pass at one point in the first half. He assisted wonderfully on Isco’s goal and was able to work his way around Kyle Walker to win the ball and get the pass off to Isco from in tight.
Thibaut Courtois and Fede Valverde also played well. Valverde was all over the pitch like usual, it really is a treat to watch.
The wheels really came off for Los Blancos after Vinicius was subbed off. The game shifted as Zidane moved more towards a 4-4-2 formation with Bale on for the young Brazilian. The last 15 minutes of play were some of Real’s worst all season.
It started with the Gabriel Jesus off a wonderful cross from De Bruyne. Claims of a push were made by Real Madrid, but it clear that Ramos just fell over trying to win the air battle ; it was a correct non-call.
Just minutes later came De Bruyne’s go ahead penalty. Just a poor, poor decision from Carvajal to attempt that tackle in the box on Raheem Sterling, he didn’t make contact with any of the ball.
Then the cherry on top was Ramos’ red card, which means he misses the next leg. In all fairness, Casemiro did make a very poor pass in the first place. This was one of the midfielder’s worst performances in a long time; his passing was off all night.
City dominated most of the second half, having way more shots on net than Real.
So, Real Madrid find themselves in a hole making the trip to Manchester. They would need at least a 2-0 victory away to advance now. And, they’ll have to do it without their captain. At least we have El Clasico to look forward to this Sunday.
More coverage of this frustrating loss to come later this evening.
